EQ and Effective Leadership

Emotionally intelligent individuals can understand, use, and manage their and other people’s emotions positively (Meyer, cited in Prezerakos, 2018). Such leaders are courageous, passionate, confident, committed, and ambitious. This way, EQ allows leaders to communicate effectively, relieve personal stress, empathize with subordinates, nurture talents, inspire subordinates, manage conflicts, and build and guide teams in achieving a common goal crucial to organizational success.

On the other hand, self-confidence refers to the trust an individual has over his or her ability and skills and a sense of self-control (Mason, 2021). In a leadership position, self-confidence is crucial in managing core feelings, including joy, sadness, fear, and anger. For instance, leaders can use their self-confidence to earn subordinates’ trust and control their thoughts and actions from these experiences.

Lastly, self-aware leaders are mindful. Mindfulness refers to the ability to focus on the present moment without judgment (Mason, 2021). In leadership, leaders ought to be focused on the present organizational state or issues to enable them to focus their strengths and resources effectively. For example, mindfulness enables shifting of one’s preoccupied thoughts to manage present needs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, EQ is a useful tool for effective leadership.  EQ allows leaders to understand themselves and their subordinates, thus facilitating effective management. In context, self-awareness enables leaders to exude humility, mindfulness, and self-confidence, all crucial to effective leadership.
