Community Health Sim Game

Business, education, public safety, and health are vital avenues to prevent and mitigate violence in the community. The game illuminates some of the problems the town is experiencing, including struggling businesses, underperforming schools, increased cost of healthcare, overcrowded health facilities, understaffing in health facilities, and declining public safety due to an increasing crime rate.

Each avenue asks for funds to accomplish specific goals that they believe will help prevent and mitigate violence in the community. Businesses want financial aid and a financial break. The healthcare sector wants money to recruit more employees, the education system needs money to invest in technology, and the public safety department needs funding to expand the jail. I put the tokens depending on each avenue’s purpose and degree of need.

A strategic investment would see a positive impact within a fifteen-year time-lapse. I put four coins on education to improve technology, which will help increase attendance and performance. I put two coins on the healthcare system to hire more staff and two coins on struggling businesses.

Education is one of the most important avenues to prevent and mitigate violence in a community. Studies associate the low quality of education with rising poverty rates, increased crimes, and general social problems (De Silva, 2017). Investing in education would help improve school attendance, performance, and the proportion of students graduating from high school, which translates to individuals getting better-paying jobs.

Education is a critical tool of peacebuilding and preventing and mitigating violence directly. Neighborhoods with good public and private education are associated with low crime levels, and within the 15 years time-lapse, the investment will count because more high schoolers will qualify for college education to pursue careers rather than criminal activities.

Education is associated with drivers of violence in communities such as poverty, inequality, marginalization, ethnic divisions, and linguistic fragmentation. These are just some of the problems that might be leading to high crime rates in Vetoville.

Additionally, increasing the quality of education and the number of people graduating from high school means businesses will not struggle to hire qualified staff because of more college graduates and skilled individuals. I perceive education as the most critical element in preventing and mitigating crime in the town.

I invested two tokens in businesses to help them recover from financial struggles. The town cannot afford businesses leaving with the current state because it would mean increasing unemployment rates, associated with increased crimes as people sort alternative ways of earning (Hipp & Kane, 2017).

Therefore, it is critical to set aside financial assistance for businesses to continue operating in town and providing employment. Two coins went to the healthcare system, which needs more staff to address the overcrowding in the facilities. Investing in health can also help increase access to mental health care and reduce financial instability associated with low levels of violent and property crime rates.

Hiring more ED staff would increase the staff-to-patient ratio and reduce the reported wait time that adds to patient frustrations. I did not invest in public safety because the Vetoville police chief emphasized an expanded budget to expand the jail.

I would have considered investing in this area if the goals were to enhance technology for surveillance, equip police officers, develop community education programs regarding crimes, and build behavioral correction facilities that focus on educating the at-risk population and people involved in crime.

Expanding the jail is not a crime prevention or mitigation intervention because it emphasizes incarceration to solve all social problems. Also, investing wisely in education, health, and business can help address the issue of public safety because of associated low poverty and crime rates.
