Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets is Inhumane – Discussion 1 Solution

Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets is Inhumane

For this assignment, you will be revising a single body paragraph from your argumentative essay. Mistakes are fine, but only if we can learn and grow from them. Please meticulously read the directions. When you think you are done revising, go back through. Then, when you think you are done again, improve word choice

  • Take the weakest paragraph in the essay (not the introduction or conclusion). Recopy the paragraph into your response. Then, copy it again. At this point, you will have two of the exact same paragraphs.
  • Revise the second version of this paragraph. Complete your revision (additions) in a different color font. If you want to delete information, mark a line through it. Don’t remove any writing completely from the text.
  • After revision, in a third paragraph, explain all of the changes you made.  How do these changes help to create a stronger text? Please note, I expect perfection here. Invest a tremendous amount of time and effort on your revision.

Professors feedback: You fail to provide any evidence in the paragraph. Have there been instances of these animals impacting neighborhoods?

Some of the animals taken in as pets, including lion cubs, monkeys, and crocodiles, are not friendly and difficult to tame. The animals pose a serious risk to people in the neighborhoods they are taken in and those who come into contact with them.

This is because these animals can lash out at their captures. There are incidences when big cats have mauled their owners. While the animals live as they should be within their environment, the danger such exotic animals pose due to their natural survival instincts is enormous, yet suppressing the instincts is inhumane and poses the risk of initiating aggression and anxiety.

Solution

Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets

The capture, caging, and keeping of exotic animals from different geographical locations has increased due to a growing legal and illegal animal trade market. Ownership of exotic animals, including lions, tigers, monkeys, or bears, is defined by state laws. The laws determine if a species is allowed, banned, or needs a special permit. However, there are no definitive guidelines and standards on exotic animal ownership and treatment. It is imperative to regulate and offer guidelines on the ownership of exotic animals to reduce the risks for injuries or accidents associated with exotic animals, especially big cats, or improve the living conditions and treatment of these animals by their owners.

Keeping Exotic Animals as Pets is Inhumane

The growing love for exotic animals fuels the massive purchase of exotic animals as pets by a specific group of people. Exotic pets are not wild and often adapt to captivity well. However, their breeding is limited, challenging living conditions, and most do not live long. Most are exposed to physical and psychological pain that genuinely surpasses the need to tame exotic animals. Man cannot provide the needs or replicate the exact natural environment these animals are snatched, making it almost inhumane to keep them as pets. Also, those that do not adapt to captivity increase the risk of injury or harm, including death to the captors and people close to them. Since 1990, more than 1,500 attacks by exotic pets have occurred. States should legalize owning exotic animals but establish clear guidelines to minimize the risk and ensure they are put under proper conditions.

Many animal rights groups are fighting to end the ownership of exotic pets in the United States. The animal rights groups believe that these animals cannot and should not be tamed. Concerns about people’s safety and animal treatment are reasonable. However, the argument should not be about banning or making ownership illegal but rather regulating the process to ensure safe environments for exotic pets and people. In support of legal ownership, many people believe exotic pets are not different from “normal” pets when trained and tamed under the right circumstances and environment. Although animals, like humans, can survive different novel environmental conditions, it is crucial to note that such adaptation is at a higher cost of repressing their natural behavior and instincts. The movement of animals from their natural habitat or the region they are captured from is often challenging. These animals are deprived of their natural habits and consequently bred in captivity, depriving them of their dignity and forcing them to adopt new instincts and living conditions.

According to the World Animal Protection, at least four out of five animals traded in the illegal wildlife trade die within the first year of their captivity or in transit due to malnutrition or confinement loneliness, attributed to the deplorable conditions in which they are kept following their capture. Such conditions deny animals their dignity as they are broken by being put in a position they cannot utilize their abilities. For instance, parrots have their beaks and feet taped and hidden in a plastic carriage for transport. Equally, stolen reptile eggs and birds are concealed in special curriers that can pass the existing security check. These transport mechanism is not only irresponsible but also inhumane.

The love for exotic pets is growing, and interested people want to enjoy the same rights as owners of “normal” pets. Thereby, the regulating bodies should seek to improve the conditions of capture, transit, training, taming, and breeding. Policies and laws should make the whole process as dignified as possible. There are rules to dog ownership, which can also apply to big cat ownership. Dogs kill more people per year than exotic big cats combined. The narrative that exotic animals are more dangerous than “normal” pets is misguided, and the only solution is to regulate the whole process and legalize the trade.
