The Pilgrimage Journey to Cathedral of St. James with Solution

The Pilgrimage Journey to Cathedral of St. James

After reviewing both the virtual tour and the supporting materials, you will write a response to the prompt listed below. Make sure to fully describe the tour and discuss each portion of the assignment prompt, and your response must be at least 400 words in length. Imagine you are a medieval pilgrim traveling to the Cathedral of St. James, Santiago de Compostela. You will include the following sections in your discussion of this virtual tour:

  • For your journey, you will depart from Paris, France and follow the most travelled route from Aymery Picaud’s Guidebook for Pilgrims (Links to an external site.). In real time, this journey takes several months, but with modern technology, you can do it in an hour in the comfort of your own home.
  • Read the General Overview, and write an introduction journal entry explaining the plan for your Pilgrimage from Paris, France to Santiago, Spain.
  • Along the way, you will visit churches with relics and shrines as outlined in the chart below. For each stop on the pilgrimage route, you will write a short journal entry describing your experience – what you saw, what you learned. You will visit 6 churches, of which you will choose 3 as the subject of your written response.
  • The final stop on your tour, of course, is the holy site of the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela. Since this is the reason for your journey, your discussion for this site will be longer and more detailed. Write about what happened as you entered this holy site.

Think about what you saw, the people you met, and what was happening around you.

Make sure to include details from the videos and readings that will give your fictional account a level of authenticity.

Solution

The Pilgrimage Journey to Cathedral of St. James, Spain

The journey to Santiago de Compostela will involve three different stops. It is expected to take approximately 1 hour, including the stops. The first stop will be at Chatellerault, Abbey Church of St. Server, Navarra, and St. James Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. By using the Tours route between Dangé-Saint-Romain and Chùtellerault, the river Vienne is visible. Bronze scallop studs decorate the streets leading to the St. James church in Chùtellerault.

Then, I will stop at Abbey Church of Saint-Sever, along the Landes route. At the church is a statue of St. James dressed as a pilgrim. Landes consists of a huge pine forest, with various Romanesque chapels remotely located within it. The final stop was at Navarra. The chapel is isolated with an octagonal stone shape. Its isolation introduces one into a mournful mood, offering a frightening experience, as Ruck explains. The presence of medieval buildings and Romanesque churches along the route introduces one to the magnificent nature of St. James Cathedral.

On arriving at Santiago de Compostela, the first thing that strikes the eyes is the intricately designed cathedral building depicting Romanesque architecture (Bolli). A male figure with additional other heavenly figures is magnificently carved and hosted by a tympanum. A robed figure at the center of this sculpture raises both hands, with other figures sitting above this centrally curved figure in a semi-circular fashion.

Many chapels are inside the church, with the main chapel hosting the apostle James’s tomb. The apostolic crypt comprises the urn containing the apostle’s remains dominating the symbolic site. Also, there is an incense burning vessel spectacularly at the cathedral. Apart from the church’s structure, there is a mix of people inside the compound. These people are mostly speaking Galician. Most pilgrims arriving are jubilated as they enter the gates of the compound. The first action once inside the cathedral is to seek sanctity by confessing sins.
